One week away...what will the aftermath look like?

Citizen Ojo welcomes guest blogger DougMG.

So DougMG tell us what's on your mind:

Let's quickly fast forward 7 days...

What will the aftermath of Barack Obama's land slide victory look like in America? What direct impacts will it have on the psyche of those Americans who still subscribe to the 'concepts of whiteness? Clearly we'll be excited and inspired and charged up.... But how will our celebrations be interpreted? Might they even be mis-interpreted as 'riots'? For those who aren't so inspired, how will their insecurities actually play out? Will organizations such as the KKK see a new revival in their memberships, and what will be their implications?

I cite one such historical scenario, where in 1910, the Unforgivably Black Jack Johnson fought and beat "The Great White Hope" Jim Jefferies. The aftermath led to a renewed cultural pride accompanied by spirited celebrations nationwide, but it also led to dozens of deaths and even lynchings.

We've never had this type of success before, of a Black man becoming president...therefore, it's really quite hard to say what we and the rest of America will do on the days after next Tuesday.

So I only wonder, what will post-November 4th look like?

Paging Joe the Plumber...Paging Joe the Plumber...Please

I came back to this????

Your man with the plan, that would be “me”, just wrapped up Homecoming Weekend HBCU Style. I was trying to rest up on Sunday after being out all weekend long. Little did I know this past weekend was going to be jammed pack with drama!! I’m not talking about that white woman who said a black man assaulted her, and carved the letter B into her cheek. Black folks knew that was fake when it was reported in the news. I’m definitely not talking about Elizabeth Hasselbeck following around a rouge Vice Presidential Candidate. Two of the worst mistakes Barbara Walters has ever made was telling us that she slept with a black guy, and hiring Hasselbeck.

The thud of the weekend was the D.L. Hughley’s CNN show. I haven’t heard black folks complaining this much since they went back to small glasses for communion. I’m not going to jump on the bash D.L Hughley band wagon; because I don’t think it’s his fault. He gives very bright commentary when asked about political issues so I know he isn’t stupid. But I believe he likes pushing the envelope, and when he does it always comes across messy. The people that I blame for this one is “us”. “Us” i.e. Blackfolks!!!! We supported BET after they dropped Teen Summit and the Nightly News. We supported BET when they started BET Uncut. We didn’t go support quality movies such as The Great Debaters, Eve’s Bayou, and Devil in a Blue Dress. We didn’t complain to the major networks after the Don Imus episode to give minorities a television show expressing our views. We didn’t condemn Bob Johnson when he alluded to Barack Obama being a drug fiend. We listen to music that degrades our women and marginalizes our men. We are the ones that gave CNN the green light to produce this. D.L., like most black folks, wants to get paid and will do what he needs to in order to make paper. Just like the dough boy on the corner, the studio gangster and the Wall Street big shot. The bottom line: If you want respect you have to carry yourself with dignity.

Side Note: The Jennifer Hudson family tragedy was shocking and sad. My prayers go out to the family.

The Low Road to the White House

Making amends with The Motor City

I believe that I have been hard on Detroit this year. It was only because of my crazy frat brother Kwame Kilpatrick that I jumped on Rock City. Watching the news recently has made me realize that you guys have a lot of problems. I truly hope that things will get better for your city.

Aw poor baby… you need a bottle and a blanket?

McCarthyism 2008

Michele Bachmann Republican Representative of Minnesota's 6th congressional district

Senator McCain, please tell me you knew this guy was a fraud. Even in your elderly years you can’t be this slow???

“The real winner last night was Joe the Plumber. Joe’s the man,” “He won, and small businesses won across America. They won because Americans are not going to let Senator Obama raise taxes in a tough economy.”
~ Quote from Senator John McCain from a campaign rally in Dowington, PA

Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher (née Joe the Plumber) of Toledo, Ohio isn’t really a plumber, and he isn’t licensed by Toledo, Lucas County or the State of Ohio. Also the local United Association of Plumbers, Steamfitters & Service Mechanices of Toledo issued a statement saying that Joe hasn’t even started apprenticeship training.

"Joe probably has a great deal more knowledge and experience in real-life business and economics than most pundits ... possibly more than Ben Bernanke, chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve."
~ Conservative blogger Fausta Wertz

Joe the Plumber is also a registered Republican….mmm.. that must be how McCain knew about him -(wink) (wink).

Joe lied to Obama and told him that he wanted to buy the business that he worked for. He said that the business earned $250,000 to $280,000 annually. The math on this seems kinda fuzzy. I wonder how an Assistant Plumber can buy his employers business making $40,000 a year? He also has that pesky problem with the State of Ohio. The Ohio Department of Taxation placed a $1,183 personal property tax lien on him.

So my question to Joe the Plumber, an unlicensed employee of Newell Plumbing & Heating, is who are you really? You dropped from a Plumber to Assistant Plumber. You make less money than you originally claimed. You received 15 mins of fame for being a fraud. You wasted hours of debate time with the candidates bringing up your name. You even referred to Obama tap dancing like “Sammy Davis Jr”. You prejudiced phony accidental Plumber. Poof be gone…..

America’s new love of Mediocrity (also known as) The dumbing down of America

This 2008 Presidential Election has brought out a new ignorance in America. It appears that we have lowered our standards when it comes to electing our political leaders. We have decided that personality trumps work experience. Terms to describe politicians such as “folksy” and “just like us” have become key words for describing qualified candidates. President George Walker Bush was once described as “someone you could have a beer with”. After almost 8 years under his rule, you now see what “someone you could have a beer with” gets you. We have citizens from all over the world coming to America to attend our colleges and universities. If an American education is good enough for someone from India, why can’t a biracial kid with an American mother and African father have the same kind of education? When did trying to better yourself with an education become such a negative? In this election when a politician has anything above a high school degree, they are called elitist. If a politician doesn’t hunt, fish or drink beer, they are called “east coast snobs”. Who came up with the idea of voting an Average Joe for president? Where did this Anti –Intellectualism come from? We don’t need Ordinary People running the country-we need Extraordinary people.

I would also like to know who started this new concept of congratulating adults for being first time voters? I’m talking about 35years plus adults that are first time voters. People are patting these folks on their backs like they invited a cure for cancer. Someone should tell them that they are late to the party. Just think of all the elections where we could have used their votes (2000)-(2004). The reason we are in this current mess is because of these individuals. Instead of giving them a handshake they need a boot to their behinds. I was driving with Citizen Wifey listening to the radio the other day and I almost wrecked the car. A local radio station was registering a 100 year old woman to vote. Are you kidding me!!! Who is to say she will even make it to November 4th. My bones crack when I get out of bed and I’m in my mid 30’s. I can only imagine what she feels like in the mornings. I hate to sound self righteous but I really need to stress this point. I don’t vote because I’m mesmerized by a candidate. I don’t vote because it’s the new hip thing to do. I vote because Medgar Evers died for me to vote. I vote because Michael Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman died for me to vote. When did it get so bad that we have to beg people to vote? This is a right that was earned through blood, sweat and tears. We have people in this country that think they can actually vote on the internet for Election Day? I know high schools are getting rid of their music programs but civics classes too??? People have been around here sleep walking, (at least for the last 7 years and 9 months that we can tell by the number of new voters), while the country is deteriorating. Our schools, infrastructure, and neighborhoods are falling apart. The jails are overcrowded and convicted criminals are walking the streets with rap sheets longer than Korean weave. And now these people are registering to vote because it’s the responsible thing to do? Give me a break!!!!

The first time voters shouldn’t take all this criticism by themselves, because some of our registered voters are just as bad. How can you make an intelligent decision about voting from chain e-mails? I could go on but the more I type the more disgusted I get.

Notes from the final Presidential Debate: Searching for Joe The Plumber

Was that you that kept sighing on stage McCain? Are you bored????

1. Who is Joe The Plumber??? I’m so tired of hearing the small business debate. By the way, Citizen Wifey is right. How does John McCain know who Barack Obama is talking to on the campaign trail?

2. McCain doesn’t want to give tax breaks to the middle class but wants to give tax breaks to businesses? Message to McCain: the trickle down model of finance doesn’t work!!!!

3. McCain is trying to buck up!!! I hope he doesn’t get too angry and blow a gasket.

4. OH UH! Bob Schieffer set it off with the “ugly” campaign questions. So if Obama would have debated in town hall meetings there wouldn’t be any negative commercials? Wow!! McCain… really? This is silly, everyone is running negative ads. Hey!!! How did Joe The Plumber get back into this conversation?

5. John McCain said it and it’s on tape “I’m proud of the people that come to my rally.” Here we go again…Denouncing and Repudiating!!! William Charles “Bill” Ayers and Acorn, remind me again which one is the greater threat to America?

6. I see McCain decided that he wanted to go there tonight. McCain and Right Wing Conservatives are mad about what John Lewis said regarding the behavior at McCain/Palin rallies. I usually watch Joe Scarborough in the mornings and I am getting tired of his “confused white guy” behavior. This concept that Obama supporters are being sensitive is ignorant. Asking a white male Republican about racism is like asking a homeless man what it’s like to walk on the moon.

7. Bob Schieffer is asking some really great questions tonight. What?? Sarah Palin is a role model to women??? She is only a role model to women that don’t know what magazines they read.

8. McCain correcting the moderator – “Climate Control”/”Climate Change”, Bob is old like you, give him a break.

9. The problem with Free Trade is that we didn’t prepare for the negative effects. We should have been re-training people for the jobs that they would lose.

10. Wow McCain came out of nowhere with that one!!! Here we go again with the sitting down with our enemies spiel.

11. Who is this Joe The Plumber????? Does he have a last name? I thought he was buying a business. Now he is getting healthcare? Wow!! You got Obama talking to the television screen trying to reach Joe as well. I really hope Joe is watching.

12. No Child Left Behind sucks!!! The politicians are going to have to hold these parents accountable as well. These kids are bad!!!!

Once again this debate didn’t do anything new. McCain just jumped bad tonight but it was all bark and no bite. Obama didn’t screw up so it’s all good. I’m really glad for McCain that they weren’t walking around tonight. Last debate he looked like Gollum (Lord of the Rings) walking around on stage.

Obama catching Hell in the Mail!!!!

Absentee ballots sent to voters in Rensselaer County, New York identified the presidential candidates as “Barack Osama” and “John McCain.” When the mistake was discovered, officials shredded the remaining “Osama” ballots and mailed correct versions to the roughly 300 people who had already received them. Voters that received both versions will be allowed to send in either one and have it counted.

How McCain and Racism are as old as Dirt.

So it has come down to this. When all else fails and a black man is beating you - out comes the “southern strategy”. The Republican wink and nod to fellow racists is in full effect. This time the perpetrator is John Sidney McCain III. Unlike “men” in the past who did the dirty work themselves, i.e. Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms and Trent Lott, he has decided that it’s best to leave the women to the dirty work. He thinks he is smart ,because he knows Senator Obama can’t fight back with white women. How much of coward are you to let your wife fight your battles? How much of a presidential candidate are you that your vice presidential candidate overshadows you?

With Governor Sarah Palin beating the drum of racism, she has brought out all the lunatics. Because I’m black (African America or whatever they are calling us this week), I’m accustom to not being liked by “some” white folks. So the racial slurs, the getting passed over for jobs by less qualified people and the occasional clutching of the purse by white women is a part of my life. So unlike some of these “new” age negroes (black folks that are shocked and saddened everytime a white person calls them The “N” Word), I knew that the racists were going to come out. I’m just surprise they waited until now. They usually come out early and often. Palin thinks that she has the moral ground to cast a cloud over Obama’s character. Her husband belonged to a “Radical Group” and she is trying to link Obama to a terrorist organization when he was 8 years old. This chick is delusional and she needs to have her head examined. She doesn’t even know what kind of magazines that she reads. Her qualifications are loosely based on her looks and the fact that she can hunt wild game. Because of Palin’s vice presidential bid, I am going to nominate Sheena “Queen of the Jungle” for Secretary of State. Cindy McCain, the new Mrs. June Evelyn Bronson Cleaver, is also trying to take swings at Obama. He could have been really nasty and talked about how she was a tack head stoner but he didn’t. Obama said that family should be left out of the campaigns’ rhetoric. Apparently McCain didn’t get the memo, because he will do anything to win this election.

Even though McCain is older than the furniture in the White House, he wants to be the next occupant. McCain thinks because he is a war hero, and 26 year Senator he should be the obvious choice for president. It’s funny how “some” white folks are always talking about how black folks feel entitled but McCain and Senator Hillary Clinton thought that they should be president based on general principle. It is easy to play on the fears of “some” white folks, because they fear anything that doesn’t look like them. They are the ones that fear the future, so they cling to the past. It seems that all you hear about everyday is how Obama needs to court the “working class” and “elderly voters”. The problem is not that they don’t know Obama (which is always the media excuse). The problem is that Obama is black. I’m not going to give them a pass, because they are having a hard time rationalizing this election. Tell them to call a therapist. Black folks have been voting for white folks since we could vote. Now one black person is running and the world is coming to an end? Well I have a message to the McCains’, Palin and all their minions. Crawl back into the caves that you came out of!!! If the McCain Camp feels that this is the only way to get into office, they really are out of touch with reality.

Something Phishy going on in Philly

A week ago, fliers went up in predominantly African-American neighborhoods of Philadelphia warning that people with outstanding warrants or unpaid parking tickets could be arrested if they show up at the polls. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Everett Gillison, plans to put up statements on the city and police Web sites to let citizens know that the handouts are false. He said that he also will record a public-service announcement for broadcast. This is similar to a 2002 Maryland gubernatorial election, where anonymous fliers in African-American communities warned people to pay parking tickets and resolve outstanding warrants before heading to the polls

The Presidential Debate part DUH. Don’t worry though because Sarah Palin likes it!!!

“My Friends” let me just tell you that this debate sucks!!!

Ten observations from the debate:

1. Why does Senator John McCain think that the black dude doesn’t know who Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are?

2. Why was Senator McCain trying to be a comedian?

3. McCain and Senator Obama, should have told the people the economy is going to get worse. Why don’t politicians like telling people bad news?

4. Can someone please tell me what the definition of Victory is when it comes to Iraq?

5. Tom Brokaw, I saw that you took charge, you need to get with Gwen Ifill to teach her how to moderate a debate.

6. Did that woman read her questions straight from the card? Did someone give her those questions to read? I bet Karl Rove was out in the parking lot handing out index cards.

7. How many heroes does McCain have? Reagan, Roosevelt…Jay Z?????

8. So Healthcare is now a Responsibility and not a Right? Uh Oh..someone needs to tell the children and the elderly about that. I don’t think they know.

9. McCain said he knows how to get Bin Laden – how and with what?

10. I heard people had drinking games during the debate – every time McCain says “My Friends” they take one to the head.

I thought McCain was going to go after Obama regarding Bill Ayers, but I guess he is too much of a coward to bring it to Obama’s face. That job is delegated to Gov. Palin or as The Uppity Negro Network say’s “That Thang”. These clowns…oops, I mean that focus group on CNN is lame. That’s why I watch MSNBC, because they don’t have scary looking people giving their opinions. These people think that the candidates can go into major detail on their policies. These debates are set up for Sound Bites….just like ESPN Sportscenter shows dunking highlights. You will never hear a candidate break down the bare bones of their programs. To talk about fixing healthcare would take 24 hours. You are talking about mathematical equations - particularly statistics. I sucked in statistics - both undergrad and grad. These debates are just for show at this point. If you don’t know who you want to vote for, then you need your head examined!!! Obama just needs to stick and move at this point. Let McCain make a mistake and hope that naked pictures of Palin will show up.

P.S. I’m not going to talk about how McCain pointed at Obama and said “that one” like he was a half man/half fish that crawled out of the swamp.

Don't drop the soap Orenthal James!!!!

After 14 years they were finally able to slay the beast known as O.J. Simpson. O.J. was found guilty on all 12 counts including kidnapping. The MSM keeps saying It’s a possibility that he could spend the rest of his life in jail. I think they are saying that to add some drama to the proceedings. I don’t think the Judge is going to throw the book at him (but don't hold me to that). I suspect though that he will do some time. I hope someone told him that there won’t be any white women in jail - just white men that act like women.

Joe Six-Pack and the Hockey Mom’s: How the Republicans put in the FIX on the Vice Presidential Debate.

Gwen Ifill had to defend her job moderating the U.S. Vice presidential debate over a book that didn’t even come out yet. Her yet to be read book, Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama, has right wing pundits crying foul. I find it funny when folks from the right talk about bias and double standards. The road to the White House has been paved with double standards. Why does Barack Obama have to “knock it out of the park” when he debates but Sarah Palin has to “just get by”? To all the people that read this Blog including my momma (hey mom)!! The FIX is in!!!!!!

You heard me people!!! The bar has been set so low for Palin, that all she needs to do is dance around the ring (aka) the rope a dope. The FIX is in!!! Tina Fey sautéed Palin on Saturday Night Live last week and Katie Couric tripped her up on light-weight questions. Palin doesn’t have an answer for McCain’s exit strategy. She just passes the blame onto Obama and how he is not ready to be president yada yada yada.. Gwen Ifill should have taken the paper that had all the Foreign Policy questions and wiped her behind with them. Palin knows Foreign Policy like I know Cryogenics. People, the FIX is in!!!! Palin didn’t answer questions - just re-directed them back at Obama (oops he was not on the stage someone should have told Palin that). What makes her think that she can give a shout out? Are you at a debate or the Tom Joyner Morning Show? That paper that Palin is looking at must have the word Maverick on it because that is all she keeps saying.

Palin is the kind of peppy cheerleader that you vote on for high school senior class president. She helps you get new soda machines in the cafeteria, organizes pep rallies for the homecoming game and raises money for band boosters. That’s the extent of what she can do. This folksy down home routine is not going to work with people I know (i.e. black folks).

I heard a reporter say that a white man called this election “A Devils Choice”. This was because he had to make a decision between a Black Man and a White Woman. When did Palin go to the top of the ticket? Only a lame presidential candidate could be passed by his number 2. On paper Palin couldn’t hold Obama’s jock strap but this election is not going to be on paper. It’s going to be just like American Idol… a popularity contest. Things will have to get worse before color is negated. Then it will be a decision between “A vote for your purse/pocketbook or your prejudice”.

My left pinky toe could have done a better job as moderator than Gwen Ifill. She looked and asked questions like someone had kidnapped her parents and told her if she stepped out of line they would be killed. She needs to get a new backbone, new questions, new outfit and a new hairdo. I couldn’t wait for the debate (or lack thereof) to be over. This wasn’t a showdown. People……the FIX is in!!!

The Search for the Young, Gifted and Black

Have you ever been embarrassed for being a member of your race? I have at times throughout my life and today I reached my tipping point. I was so embarrassed that when Citizen Hubby picked me up from work today, I began crying. I’m asking myself, “What can I do to make our race better?” Here’s what happened.

While waiting for the light rail, three Black males in their late teens ran towards the train as it was leaving (I was waiting on the next train). Since they missed the train, they sat on a bench near me. Two police officers (black and white) were already at the station. A few minutes later, the officers made their way to the young boys. I did not hear the conversation, but I thought to myself, “Here we go!” They did ask for their train ticket and I guess the one they showed was expired because he ended up writing them a ticket. All while white folks from the business were walking to the platform, looking at what was taking place.

We got on the train and I ended up near them. Two were sitting down and one stood. Our train gets full very quickly, so I stood as well. There was a family sitting in seats next to me with two/kids around 7 and 8 years old. What came out of the mouths of the Black males? “N-word, Sh&^, Bit*!, etc.” while laughing. Of course they were loud; that’s our stereotypical trademark. While this was going on, my skin just crawled, I said under my breath, “Jesus, get me off this train” and thinking to myself, “This is the reason why white folks don’t want to vote for Obama.” They think the majority of Blacks act this way. I mean, how in the hell are you going to say those things loudly with kids on the train? Oh right, they are the generation that does not care and it’s all about them.

I really wanted to say something to them, but Citizen Hubby always tells me that I am going to get shot. But it’s so frustrating and embarrassing! I hate to see us act ignorant, especially in front of white people. I know that a lot of them already don’t have positive thoughts about us. In the car, Citizen Hubby told me about a study that Michelle Martin reported on today regarding how whites still have a negative view of Blacks. When I was on the train, I swear I wanted to stand up and ask the riders, “Excuse me. Raise your hand if you think all Black people are like the 3 men that just got off the train.” Just so I can justify what I was thinking. Oh and as they got off, they constantly said, “Excuse me (in a professional “white person” tone and followed that with “Big N-word coming through.” They were a bunch of string beans. I said “Thank God!” to myself as they got off the train, but my rage, disappointment and embarrassment continued to fester.

I called on my good friend, who works with a lot of African-American males, because I just needed to talk to him and ask “Why do a lot of Black males act like that? And, “Can I say something to them.” He said saying something to them is a risk, but is all in the tone and how you deliver the message (not confrontational make them embarrassed, etc.). I need to work on how to do that. If my Goddaughter (who is 2 years old) was with me today, I would not have hesitated saying something because she does not need to hear that language. No one needs to hear that language.

Citizen Hubby and I constantly debate on what causes this type of behavior. We both agree it’s today’s music, but he thinks that I am a contributor to it by listening to it. I disagree because I know the difference. I know that it’s entertainment and don’t live by it. Is it wrong for me to listen to a few tracks from Little Kim’s “Hard Core” even though the lyrics are raunchy? I have a dance background so I’m really focusing on the beat. I know you are going to say to yourself, “There you go with that excuse!” It’s the truth! I can listen to the track without the lyrics. Again, I know the difference, but a lot of these kids don’t. They think that is what life is all about. I can’t stand the music that is out now, but I do love the music during my high school (89-93) and college days (93-97).

What do you think we can do to make our race better? I don’t know what to do. ~ Citizen Wifey

Minorities: The Bailout Scapegoat?

"Loaning to minorities and risky folks is a disaster." ~ Neil Cavuto, host of Fox News' Your World

"When federal regulators demanded parity between racial groups in lending, the only way to achieve a quota would be to begin making intentionally bad lending decisions." ~ Drew Zahn a pundit on WorldNetDaily

“Loans started being made on the basis of race, and often little else” ~ Rep. Michele Bachmann, a Republican who represents Minnesota’s 6th District

Washington Mutual, Inc., one of the nation’s leading banks for consumers and small businesses, has once again been recognized as a top employer by Hispanic Business magazine and the Human Rights Campaign. Hispanic Business magazine recently ranked WaMu sixth in its annual Diversity Elite list, which names the top 60 companies for Hispanics. The company was honored specifically for its efforts to recruit Hispanic employees, reach out to Hispanic consumers and support Hispanic communities and organizations. The Human Rights Campaign, the largest national gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) civil rights organization, also awarded WaMu its second consecutive 100 percent score in the organization’s 2009 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), which measures progress in attaining equal rights for GLBT employees and consumers. WaMu joins the ranks of 259 other major U.S. businesses that also received top marks in the annual survey. The CEI rated a total of 583 businesses on GLBT-related policies and practices, including non-discrimination policies and domestic partner benefits. In both surveys, WaMu earned points for competitive diversity policies and programs, including the recently established Latino, African American and GLBT employee network groups, all of which have a corporate executive sponsor and champion. ~ Mark Krikorian, in an article on National Review Online titled CAUSE AND EFFECT (Dated Sep 26, 2008 the day after Washington Mutual was sold to JP Morgan).

So now it’s minorities’ that placed America’s Economic Fortunes in a tailspin? People that had no business getting credit were buying homes, which later on, they would not be able to afford. Someone had to have known that the numbers didn’t add up? They should not have even been able to get credit from Old Navy.

Sure there were individuals that gamed the system but not everybody was trying to get over. Some people were just trying to have the American Dream. The same American Dream that is advertised on television with blond hair girls, apple pie and vacations to Disney World. Still, someone should have been there to put a stop to the process.

This is bigger than Tyrone, Keisha, Hector or Rosalina trying to live in a decent house with a backyard. This is about Chip and his friends wearing thousand dollars suits and making decisions out of greed. Wall Street, Banks, Mortgage Companies, and New Housing Developments all were turning a blind eye in hopes of a quick payoff. There is enough blame to go around but how typical it is to blame White America’s standard fall guy. If people would take the time to wake up, they would realize that we are all in this together.
